How buying guides are built
Know how we compare.
Clear criteria, traceable sources and honest limits help you choose a learning or kitchen tool that fits your need.
Research-based checklists · no hands-on testing · no products named yet

Start with the reader’s need.
Our buying guides start with a task, not a commission. We cover a category only when it supports one of the site’s learning tasks: checking sources, practicing food-label units, organizing meals at home, building a learning routine or preparing questions for a care team.
Define the task.
What does the reader want to learn or organize?
Set the criteria.
Which features matter for that task, and which do not?
Check public guidance.
What do official sources say that shapes the checklist?
Explain the trade-offs.
Show benefits, drawbacks and a free alternative that needs no purchase.
Our guides do not cover supplements or any product sold with health-result claims.
Criteria should fit the category.
Each guide uses criteria that make sense for its category. These are examples of what we ask readers to check.
| Category | What to compare | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Online courses | Curriculum, author credentials, sample lessons, access and support | Syllabus, a sample lesson, current terms |
| Books and cookbooks | Readability, references, publication date, serving information | Sample pages, edition, cited sources |
| Scales and measuring tools | Units, markings, display, capacity, cleaning | Manual and manufacturer specifications |
| Templates, journals and notebooks | Layout, editability, legibility, privacy, format | Page previews, file or print details |
| Meal-prep containers | Capacity, seals, storage, care | Manufacturer instructions and specifications |
| Habit-planner apps | Ease of use, reminders, accessibility, data controls | Current app version, privacy and access terms |
These are evaluation criteria, not reviewed or ranked products. We do not assign scores we cannot support.
Research and hands-on testing are different.
No hands-on testing has been done for this site. Nobody has used, measured or compared any product for these guides. Each guide is an evaluation checklist built from public specifications and official guidance, such as the FDA’s guide to the Nutrition Facts label.
A manual can tell you which units a scale shows. It cannot tell you how easy the display is to read in your kitchen.
That is why our guides say what to check, and leave the final judgment to you.
If hands-on testing is ever added, the guide will describe the method, the product version, the date and what was actually observed. A free sample alone would not count as testing.
What we need before a product could be named.
Today our guides name no products. Before any product could ever be named, we would need all of the following:
- current manufacturer or seller documentation for the exact model or edition;
- the current terms, such as access, renewal, refund or return terms;
- a price checked on a stated date, shown with that date;
- a clear disclosure of any relationship with the seller, placed near the link.
Until then, each guide offers a reader fill-in shortlist so you can apply the checklist to options you find yourself.
Know the limits.
- A listed feature is not an observed result. Specifications can be wrong or change.
- Our guides do not judge whether a product suits your health needs. That is a conversation for your care team.
- No product is required. Each guide includes a free alternative.
- Guides are not yet reviewed by a clinician. See our Editorial Policy.
Keep comparisons current.
We aim to recheck each guide’s sources at least every three months and its links every month, and sooner when a source or specification changes. The “updated” date at the top of each guide shows the last check.
